About Black Gram
Dried black gram, also known as urad dal or Vigna mungo, is a staple pulse crop in India, known for its high protein content and nutritional value, used in various dishes and also for its medicinal properties in Ayurveda.
Origin and Cultivation:
Black gram is believed to have originated in India and is a major pulse crop cultivated throughout the country. It's a warm-weather crop, thriving in tropical regions with hot and humid climates. It can be grown in various soil types, but well-drained loamy soil with a pH of 6.5 to 7.8 is ideal. Black gram is cultivated during the rainy (kharif) and summer seasons, and in some regions, during the winter (rabi) season as well. It is also used as nutritive fodder, especially for milch animals.
Nutritional Value:
Black gram is a rich source of protein, containing about 26% protein, which is almost three times that of cereals. It's also a good source of carbohydrates, minerals (calcium, phosphorus, iron), and vitamins. It's a low-fat and low-cholesterol food option. It is a good source of iron, folic acid, calcium, magnesium, and potassium. Black gram beans contain soluble mucilaginous polysaccharides and high dietary fiber content.
Uses and Benefits:
Culinary Uses: Black gram is used in various Indian dishes, both as whole pulses and split pulses (urad dal).
Ayurvedic Uses: In Ayurveda, black gram is used to soothe inflammation and relieve pain, and is also used in a special therapy called "Brihmana Therapy" for weight gain.
Health Benefits: Helps in increasing body bulk and energy levels. Strengthens the body and increases lifespan. Good for bones, skin, and nervous system. Can help in reducing blood cholesterol and protecting the colon mucosa. Can be used topically to soothe aching joints and painful areas.
Other Uses: Used as feed for milch cattle. Black gram straw can be used as roughage for livestock. The plant is a mini-fertilizer factory, maintaining and restoring soil fertility through nitrogen fixation.
Harvesting and Storage:
Black gram should be harvested when 70-80% of the pods are matured and most of the pods turn black. The harvested crop should be dried on a threshing floor for a few days, then threshed. The clean seeds should be sun-dried for 3-4 days to bring their moisture content down to 8-10% for safe storage.
