About Proso Millets
Proso millet (Panicum miliaceum), also known as common millet, is a fast-growing, drought-tolerant crop used for food and forage, rich in protein and fiber, and gluten-free. Also known as panivaragu, varigalu, barri, common millet, broomcorn millet, hog millet, French white Proso millet is a staple grain in central India, southern India, and the mountainous parts of Uttarakhand.
Proso millet is a warm-season grass capable of producing seed in 60 to 100 days after planting. Because of its relatively short growing season, it has a low moisture requirement and is capable of producing food or feed where other grain crops would fail. Proso millet is a good source of protein, fiber, and essential vitamins and minerals, including B vitamins, iron, and magnesium. It is a gluten-free grain, making it suitable for individuals with gluten sensitivities or following a gluten-free diet. It has a low glycemic index, which can be beneficial for managing blood sugar levels. It is a good source of antioxidants that help protect against free radicals.
